In yesterday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Gail Appleson did a review on two of our wines: Luna di Luna Pink Merlot & LuLu B. Chardonnay. The Luna di Luna is actually one of our charity wines: a portion of the proceeds go to benefit Breast Cancer Research. Check out this link to read the article!

Luna di Luna, Pink Merlot, Veneto, Italy ($9.99)

LuLu B., Chardonnay, France ($10.99)
With or without pink bottle, these two are refreshing
By Gail Appleson
St. Louis Cellars, 2640 South Big Bend Boulevard, has been open only since November, but it’s already becoming a destination for special events held with its adjacent sister company, St. Louis Closet Co. Earlier this month, for example, the two companies hosted some 350 guests at a Women’s History Month celebration honoring Maplewood’s women business owners.
St. Louis Cellars, which displays bottles by taste and style, offers wines under $20, and many have unusual and quirky labels. For the event, the shop had a wine tasting with fun labels like Mommy’s Time Out, Little Black Dress and Mad Housewife. However, one of the wines that really caught my eye was in an opaque, bubble-gum-pink bottle on a shelf. It’s the 2006 Luna Di Luna Premium Pink Merlot selling for $9.99. This Italian rosé, introduced in June, is made from 100 percent Merlot grapes grown in Veneto. The color of the bottle suggested that the wine might be sweet, but a salesman assured me that it wasn’t and that the wine was one of the store’s big sellers. Although I’m not big on gimmicky labels, I figured it’s not fair to judge a bottle by its color. I decided to give this rosé a chance.
I did question my judgment when a fellow reporter commented the bottle’s hue reminded her of Pepto-Bismol. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed this wine. While it’s fruity, it’s definitely not sweet, and it definitely doesn’t look or taste like Pepto-Bismol.
Instead, this beautiful salmon-colored wine tastes like cherries to start and ends with a refreshing citrus finish. It’s light, clean and easy to drink. It made me long for summer. But the wine is also fine for an aperitif at any time of the year or as a pair with lighter, delicate cuisines.
I also bought the 2004 Lulu B. Chardonnay, which was part of the event’s tasting and sells for $10.99. Lulu B. is the daughter of the famous French winemaker Louis Bernard. This wine is made from 100 percent Chardonnay grapes grown in vineyards near Limoux in the Languedoc region. This is a medium-bodied white, with the clean taste of green apples and a luxurious, soft, silky mouthfeel. There is no taste of oak, and it has a refreshing citrus finish. It would work well as an aperitif or with grilled chicken or fish.

From St. Louis Woman Magazine:
Is your daily serving of fruit a glass of wine? While most laugh, I have news for you: a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away. There are numerous studies out today detailing the health benefits of drinking either red or white wine, but it is not just heart health (or your nerves) that are positively effected by your daily indulgence.
A new study, published in January 2008 by The New England Journal of Medicine found a boost in brainpower for women who enjoy one drink a day. The study says that, “moderate drinkers scored better than teetotalers on tests of mental function and had a 23% reduced risk of mental decline compared with nondrinkers.” Another study points to ethanol, or the alcohol component in wine, as the substance that can help lower cholesterol levels and increase ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.
Middle-aged people who begin drinking moderate amounts of alcohol, especially wine, are “38% less likely to develop fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular problems or to get coronary heart procedures,” as found by Miranda Hitti on WebMD.com. If that’s not enough reason to pop that cork, then I don’t know what is.
So visit a wine store today rather than the doctor and take home a bottle of my favorite Spring White Blend—Evolution. This is a crowd pleaser no matter who the crowd. A blend of 9 white varietals, this wine from Dundee, Oregon is a lush, off-dry, somewhat tropical wine with a crisp finish. It is divine with steak, pork tenderloin and fish—also great for your health—and it retails at Saint Louis Cellars for $19.99/bottle.
