Wine of the Week

Week of November 23rd:

Name: Dogajolo
Type: Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Tuscany, Italy

Thanksgiving is this week, and this is a great wine for the holiday! This young “Super-Tuscan” is 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cab.  Fruity and intense flavors, with hints of berries, coffee, vanilla and spice are matched with a supple tannin structure and a long finish. This wine would be a fabulous addition to any Thanksgiving table!

Week of November 16th:

Name: Erath
Type: Pinot Noir
Region: Dundee, Oregon

Aromas of black cherry, underscored by sweet mandarin orange followed by warm, clove-laced vanilla and subtle hints of anise and caramel. Opens on the palate with more hints of silky sweet black cherry. Try this wine with your Thanksgiving turkey, or other days of the year with Thai or Chinese pepper sauce, grilled scallops, thin crust pizza marguerita, pasta with red sauce and zesty BBQ. 88 Points Wine Spectator.

Week of November 9th:

B-Side-Cab-Bottle

Name: B Side
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Napa Valley, California

This Bordeaux-style Cab has aromas of currant and ripe plum with pencil lead and earthy, clay notes followed by scents of new leather and black olives. The palate is very supple with a core of cassis and black cherry fruit, layered with hints of wild strawberry and yellow plum. The finish is silky with refined French oak flavors intermingled with vanilla and subtle oak char.  Braised short ribs with horseradish and parsnip mashed potatoes.  91 Points Wine Enthusiast.

Week of November 2nd:

Justin-Obtuse

Name: Justin Vineyards’ Obtuse
Type: Late Harvest Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Paso Robles, California

We are absolutely in love with this dessert wine from Justin Vineyards!  If you like Ports, but they have a little bit too big of a bite on the finish, this is a fabulous choice!  A bittersweet chocolate note accentuates jammy fruit aromas of raspberry, sweet cherry and plum. The wine is lush and sumptuous on the palate with chocolate, cherry and rich plum flavors and it has an extremely smooth finish.  May be served as an excellent companion to any kind of sweets.

Week of October 26th:

Big-Red-Monster

Name: Big Red Monster
Type: Red Blend
Region: California

The perfect party wine for your Halloween get-togethers, this red blend of Syrah, Zinfandel and Petite Syrah is full-bodied and slightly spicy. It has a nice, fruity flavor of black cherry and plum with some spice and a nice finish.  When pairing it with food, keep it simple.

Week of October 19th:

Werewolf-Cab

Name: Werewolf
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Romania

Halloween is almost here, and Saint Louis Cellars has a bunch of fun, Halloween-themed wines to make your party perfect!  The Werewolf Cabernet Sauvignon is dark crimson red color with blackberry, earth and tobacco notes. Not too heavy, it will put hair on your palms.

Week of October 12th:

Ed-Hardy-Sangria

Name: Ed Hardy
Type: Sangria
Region: Spain

A really tasty Sangria — balanced but not too sweet.  Light, low alcohol content (8%) makes this the perfect with for barbecue, Mexican food and your Halloween festivities!

Week of October 5th:

Superstition

Name: Superstition
Type: Riesling Pinot Blanc
Region: Germany

This wine is perfect for the Halloween holiday!  51% Riesling, 48% Pinot Blanc. It combines the crisp, fruity minerality of one of the world’s finest Rieslings with the creamy, nutty nuances of Pinot Blanc.

Week of September 28th:

A-to-Z-Pinot-Gris-Label

Name: A to Z
Type: Pinot Gris
Region: Willamette  Valley, Oregon

This week’s wine of the week was a Wine Club feature in September!  Beautiful yellow gold with flashes of emerald.  Lovely aromatics of citrus and tropical fruits (mango, papaya, kiwi), lychee, honeysuckle and acacia flowers, nectarines and pineapple.  A wine of great power, richness and length balanced by ripe acidity and structure.  Great by itself or paired with food, especially exotic dishes, cheese and seafood.

Week of September 21st:

Bliss-Schoolhouse-Red

Name: Bliss
Type: Red Blend
Region: Mendocino, California

The Bliss Schoolhouse Red out of Mendocino, California is the perfect wine to help usher in Fall.  Along with–as they refer to it–the forgotten grape, Merlot, this blend is mostly Merlot and Cab with a touch of Zin. It has juicy fruit with depth and richness, a silky mouth feel and smoky oak accents.  Perfect with deep dish pizza, beef lasagna or just about anything.

Week of September 14th:

Miner

Name: Miner
Type: Viognier
Region: Simpson County, California

Whether you like it or not, Fall is just around the corner, so this week’s selection is a wine from our new Fall table!  Aromatically complex with citrus and honeysuckle notes on the nose and a plush feel on the palate, our Viognier consistently displays a fine balance of natural acidity and intense concentration.  Pairs equally well with lightly flavored foods as well as full-flavored poultry, veal, lamb and pork as well as desserts and cheeses.

Jigsaw-Pinot-Noir

The Jigsaw Pinot Noir was our primary red wine for the August Wine Club.  Vibrant ruby red color with the promise of complexity revealed through aromas of cherries and raspberries. Structure and balance on the palate with rich tones of earth, wild mushroom, spice and plum.  Pair with grilled fish with fresh herbs, paella, wild mushrooms, meatloaf, anything braised or wrapped in bacon, as well as Thai and Indian takeout.

Week of August 31st:

Petite-Petit-Label

Name: Petite Petit

Region: Lodi, California

This week’s wine is a selection from our “Splurge” section!  Aged 14 months in French oak barrels, this carnivalistic blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot is definitely the star of the show.  Trunk full of blueberry, plum, violet and chalky tannins gives a seamless finish to this jumbo-sized offering. Perfect with Boeuf Bourguignon or BBQ.

Week of August 24th:

Lagaria-Chard

Name: Lagaria
Type: Chardonnay
Region: Venezie, Italy

This unoaked Chardonnay displays dry, fruity flavors that characterize this varietal reminiscent of the wine’s origin in northeastern Italy.  It is a deliciously refreshing aperitif and a wonderful match for fish and white meat dishes.

Week of August 17th:

Pink-Ink

Name: Pink Ink
Type: Rosé
Region: Napa Valley, California

This is a classic, beautiful French-style Rosé made from the first pressings of Cab and Merlot.  Although pale in color, it is not a sweet wine, but a beautiful food wine made for the summer.  Casual enough for sipping by the pool and good with most any lunch food, this wine will be a delightful addition to any party.

Week of August 10th:

Stuck-On-You-Shiraz

In honor of our Elvis Wine Tasting on Saturday, August 15th, this week’s feature is the “Stuck On You” Shiraz from Graceland Cellars.  Fruit-forward and medium-bodied with red berries and spicy tannins in layer with vanilla and cedar to build flavor upon flavor ending in a smooth, long finish.  Ideal with hearty meat dishes, outdoor grilling or to Memphis-style slow cooked ribs and BBQ brisket.

Week of August 3rd:

Piccini-Chianti

Type: Chianti
Region: Italy

After much demand, we have brought in our first Chianti of the season.  This traditional favorite starts soft on the palate and finishes with clean, delicate fruit.  Great with a variety of dishes.

Week of July 27th:

Two-Princes-Riesling

Region: Nahe, Germany

P2 displays a perfect balance between sweetness, acidity and minerality. Week of July 20th:

Dragon's-Hollow-Cab

Here’s a fun one, and a first for Saint Louis Cellars Food & Wine: a Chinese wine!  Deep red in color with primary flavors of black currant with overtones of blackberry and mint.  It has medium tannins with a very smooth drinking style.  It is well suited to all types of meat dishes and stews.

Week of July 13th:

Yellow+Blue Rose

Region: Mendoza, Argentina

Made with organically grown grapes, this Rosé is coral-colored with warm pink undertones.  Effusive aromas of ripe strawberries, tangerines and melons.  Medium-bodied, with fine acidity and a long mineral laden finish.  It is a versatile wine that pairs well with a wide variety of foods.

Week of July 6th:

Steele-Viognier

Type: Viognier
Region: Lake County, California

We are so excited about this wine because we just got in back in our store after months of being without it…and this time, it’s at an amazingly low price!  Peach and apricot flavors have excellent richness and intensity, with lingering concentration and just enough lemony acidity to keep it refreshing.  Complements Asian foods, especially Thai cuisine.

Week of June 29th:

BOOM BOOM Syrah

Saturday is the 4th of July, and this is the perfect wine for your celebrations!  This Syrah has plenty of snap and sizzle.  Flavors of blueberry and boysenberry fruit underscored with layers of carefully managed vanilla, tobacco and silky tannins.  Fantastic with chili, grilled meats and other spicy, homemade dishes.

Week of June 22nd:

Region: Marlborough, New Zealand

A perfect Sauvignon Blanc to kick off the official Summer season!  This white is a plush, approachable wine, highlighted by the refreshing fruit accents and acidity that characterize wines from this region.  The wine shows flavors of honeydew melon, passion fruit and peach over a citrus background.  Enjoy on its own or pair it with seafood, spicy ethnic cuisine or grilled veggies.  90 Points Wine & Spirits.

Week of June 15th:

Dads-Day-Off

Type: Pinot Noir
Region: Italy

Father’s Day is on Sunday, so what better way to show Dad how much you care than with a bottle of wine?  The Dad’s Day Off Pinot Noir is a tasty red wine that is well-balanced with delicious fruit flavors and a long finish.  Pair this wine with beef or as an aperitif.

Week of June 8th:

Broadbent-Vinho-Verde

Type: Vinho Verde
Region: Portugal

This light-bodied white wine is featured in June 2009’s Sauce Magazine under the “Drink Now” feature  (Click on the “In the News” tab at the top of our blog to read the whole review).  Honest and racy, it zings the palate with crisp, refreshing lime zest.  Zippy on the palate.  Perfect with Caesar Salad.  Also good with fish, shellfish and poultry.

Week of June 1st:

Conundrum-2007-Label

With the opening of Saint Louis Cellars Food & Wine this past weekend, and the expansion into wines that are above $20, we wanted to feature one of our new wines!  The Conundrum is bursting with fragrant honeysuckle and jasmine, with ripe melon, peach, nectarine and honeycomb grace notes.  There is a plenty of acidity and a creamy texture on the mid-palate that make this a great aperitif or complement to salads, spicy fare and even fruit desserts.
